The DataJam Pasos Libres is an international technological competition against modern slavery and an alternative learning scenario to educate a generation of citizens capable of disrupting human trafficking and forced labour through innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology.

The DataJam Pasos Libres 2024 is the fifth version of the first global technological innovation competition on modern slavery, created by Pasos Libres and IBM in 2018. This year Pasos Libres and the Australian organization Walk Free will collaborate to implement a competition focused on designing a monitoring and tracking tool that encourages and allows companies in Latin America to evaluate and report their progress in implementing the recommendations to manage modern slavery provided by Walk Free’s Modern Slavery Benchmarking Tool.

What is the DataJam Pasos Libres like?
The DataJam Pasos Libres is an 8-day online competition in which 80 participants from all over Latin America develop data-driven solutions to combat modern slavery. Participating teams have access to expert mentoring that enhances their ability to overcome the proposed challenge. Additionally, winning teams have the opportunity to collaborate with event organizers to continue developing and implementing their solutions.
What is the Modern Slavery Benchmarking Tool?
It is a tool designed to help companies establish good practices to assess and address the risks of modern slavery in their operations and throughout their value chain. It provides companies with a preliminary score of their current performance and a list of steps they can take to improve it, including information that should be disclosed to their stakeholders.
What tools do I need to compete?
Each participant must have a computer with the requirements (hardware and software) that they consider necessary, as well as Internet access. The organizers of the event will provide access to digital tools for collaborative work and communication, as well as the data sets necessary for the development of the competition. Participants will be able to collect, create and use their own data sets and any technological tools or materials they consider necessary.
Who can participate?
Undergraduate, graduate, technicians and professionals with knowledge in the development of technological solutions, data analysis, design, marketing, business and finance, as well as human trafficking, human rights, crime prevention, justice, care to victims, among other related area. The undergraduate students must be studying at least the year or semester that represents 60% of their career. All participants must be over 18 years old.

How do I register?
You can register your team by completing the registration form on this website. To register, you must form an interdisciplinary work team, with a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of five (5) members. Each team must have at least one data scientist, programmer or developer.
The DataJam Pasos Libres’ organizers will accept 80 participants (between 30 and 37 teams).
Is the registration free?
Yes. Registration is free. However, remember that places are limited. If your team is selected, their commitment will be to actively participate during the whole competition and develop an innovative solution that helps stop forced labor using the power of data.
